ASU Partners With U.S. Army and Air Force on Energy Resilience

Arizona State University is expanding its role in national defense through new long-term partnerships with the U.S. Army and Air Force focused on energy and water resilience at military installations.

ASU recently signed separate 10-year Intergovernmental Support Agreements (IGSAs) with the two military branches, allowing them to tap into the university’s expertise, facilities, and technical resources for infrastructure planning and modernization.

Under the agreements, ASU can support military installations with services including utility metering and billing analysis, energy and water assessments, building automation, distribution network modernization, on-site power generation, microgrid development, independent project reviews, and energy-readiness exercises.

The partnership builds on work already underway between ASU and the Army at Fort Huachuca in southern Arizona. The July agreement formalizes that relationship while expanding the model to include the Air Force.

The significance extends beyond reducing utility costs. Modern military installations depend on reliable electricity and water to operate mission-critical systems, making resilient infrastructure increasingly important to national security.

For Arizona, the partnership also demonstrates the intersection of several areas in which the state is developing significant capabilities: defense, energy technology, advanced infrastructure, workforce development and university-led innovation.

ASU's involvement provides another example of Arizona institutions playing a direct role in solving national-scale technology and infrastructure challenges.

As military installations modernize for an increasingly technology-dependent defense environment, partnerships connecting universities, government and industry could become an increasingly important part of ensuring U.S. infrastructure remains resilient.
