Phoenix Fintech Pathfinder Raises $12M Series A to Take Its Arizona-Built ESA Card National

By Kyle Macdonald, COO of Silicon Oasis

A Phoenix fintech startup that built its business around an Arizona program is now raising national capital to take it to other states. Pathfinder announced Nov. 2 that it has raised a $12 million Series A to expand its charge card and app for families who pay for schooling through education savings accounts.

Portage Ventures, a fintech-focused venture firm, led the round, with participation from Reach Capital, Gradient and Stand Together Ventures Lab. The company has now raised $16 million in total, including a $4 million seed round co-led by Reach Capital and Gradient.

Pathfinder was co-founded by CEO Amaan Ahmad and Sidharth Jain, both former microschool leaders who saw firsthand how much paperwork families face when they spend education savings account funds. Its Pathfinder Education Visa Charge Card, issued by Column, N.A., works with an app that uses AI to show families in real time which expenses are eligible, store their receipts and file reimbursement requests on their behalf. Approved reimbursements pay down the card balance.

The company launched in Arizona in March and says it now serves more than 8,000 accounts in the state’s program, with accounts roughly doubling month over month, largely through word of mouth. Education vendors have begun recommending Pathfinder to families at checkout.

“Arizona is the vanguard for education choice, and we are confident this model can be adapted to other states seamlessly,” Ahmad said.

The new capital will fund product development and expansion. Pathfinder is pursuing money-transmitter and servicing licenses and plans to operate in at least six states in 2027.

That matters because Pathfinder is following a path Arizona should want to see more often: a startup finds its first market in an Arizona program, proves its model with Arizona customers and then exports it nationally. Stephanie Choo, general partner and co-head of Portage Ventures, framed the opportunity as infrastructure: school choice is expanding rapidly, she said, but “the financial infrastructure supporting these programs has not kept pace.”

It also adds to a growing group of Arizona fintech companies building on regulated financial infrastructure. Licensing, compliance and bank partnerships are slow, expensive work, and the companies that get through them build durable advantages.

Rounds like this are part of how Arizona becomes a Top 5 technology ecosystem: national investors backing Arizona founders, and Arizona companies competing in markets well beyond the state. Pathfinder’s next test is whether its model works as smoothly in states with different rules. That is the larger Silicon Oasis story.
