Arizona Records Historic $109B Economic Development Year as Semiconductor Sector Accelerates

Arizona just completed its strongest economic development year on record, with the semiconductor industry playing a central role in the surge.

During the fiscal year ending June 30, companies working with the Arizona Commerce Authority and its economic development partners committed to more than $109 billion in new investment and 26,225 projected jobs statewide. Both figures represent single-year records, according to the ACA. (Arizona Commerce Authority)

The scale of the increase is significant. The prior fiscal year produced approximately $31.6 billion in projected capital investment, meaning the latest total represents a more than threefold increase. (Arizona Commerce Authority)

Semiconductors Are Reshaping Arizona's Economy

Much of the momentum can be traced to Arizona's rapidly expanding semiconductor cluster.

TSMC recently announced another $100 billion expansion of its Arizona operations, bringing its planned investment in the state to $265 billion. The company's Arizona roadmap now encompasses 10 fabrication facilities, two advanced packaging facilities and an R&D center. (Arizona Commerce Authority)

But the impact extends well beyond one company.

Arizona has increasingly attracted the broader infrastructure required to support advanced chip manufacturing. The state's FY2026 economic development wins included projects involving Amkor, ASML, Applied Materials, Brewer Science, Tocalo, Busch Vacuum Solutions and KPPC Advanced Chemicals, alongside TSMC. This clustering effect is important. Semiconductor manufacturing requires an extensive network of equipment manufacturers, specialty chemical suppliers, engineering firms, researchers, construction companies and highly skilled workers. As anchor investments grow, the economic opportunity surrounding them grows as well.

The Phoenix Business Journal has highlighted this semiconductor-driven expansion as a major contributor to Arizona's record year, reporting that announced investment was nearly three times the previous year's level. (The Business Journals)

Growth Is Extending Beyond Chips

Arizona's economic development story isn't limited to semiconductors.

The state's FY2026 projects also included companies across aerospace and defense, health care, logistics, technology, retail and advanced manufacturing. Hadrian expanded in Mesa, Axon in Scottsdale, Cognite in Tempe and Burlington in Buckeye, among numerous other projects across 23 Arizona communities. (Arizona Commerce Authority)

That diversification matters because the semiconductor boom has the potential to become a foundation for a much broader advanced-industry economy.

Arizona is no longer simply competing for individual corporate relocations. The state is developing interconnected clusters spanning semiconductors, aerospace and defense, advanced manufacturing, AI and other emerging technologies.

For Arizona's technology ecosystem, the opportunity now is to translate this unprecedented infrastructure investment into more homegrown innovation—new startups, suppliers, technologies and founders that can build alongside the global companies increasingly choosing Arizona.
