Why Arizona’s AI Future Depends on Connection Brian McCarthy

This is the second article in a three-part series based on the report The State of AI in Arizona 2026 and the companion report The Arizona AI Leaders 2026, recently published by ai48 and Stride Group. The first article introduced the idea of a Sixth C — Compute — as a useful way to think about Arizona’s next economic phase. This article builds on that framework by focusing on how Arizona’s unique strengths across the full AI stack can and must work together to create a compelling and sustainable economic advantage.

Arizona’s AI economy is built on a set of interconnected capabilities that together support the tools that individuals and organizations use every day. The state is strong in semiconductor manufacturing and advanced packaging. Data center growth is significant. Photonics adds a unique layer of technical depth. Universities and community colleges are producing qualified talent, and local industries create real-world demand for AI applications. These strengths reflect years of investment, institutional development, and a supportive business and economic development environment.

Arizona also has a growing layer of startup, investor, and ecosystem organizations that help turn technical strength into commercial activity. Founder-led groups, industry associations, angel networks, and venture firms create the channels through which talent finds companies, companies find customers, and promising ideas find capital.

The challenge is that many of these areas still operate too independently. While all the layers are present, they do not yet connect with enough consistency to compound their value. The result is a state with real capacity and potential, but not yet the level of integration to turn that capacity into a consistently compounding advantage—an AI Economy Flywheel, if you will. That integration can only be built through intentional, repeated interactions, shared priorities, and a stronger habit of working across the ecosystem.

This is exactly where the opportunity for Arizona is. By aligning infrastructure, industry, education, and capital—and ensuring they move together in a common direction—the state becomes easier to build in, easier to invest in, and easier to grow in. We can create that optimal operating environment for founders, more pathways for talent, and an obvious case for outside investment.

Arizona is also well positioned to be a leader in solving real-world challenges for companies across our varied industries to help them scale and compete at a global level. That practical, on-the-ground experience gives Arizona builders the real-world experience to then bring battle-tested solutions to the broader market.

Some regions may lead in a single AI sector, but Arizona does not need to outdo coastal tech hubs, data center markets, or venture capital centers. Arizona’s opportunity for leadership is in linking our formidable assets in a way very few areas can, thus enabling us to create an advantage that is broader than any single sector.
