Microchip closes Hailo acquisition, expanding Chandler chipmaker’s edge AI portfolio

Chandler-based Microchip Technology has completed its acquisition of Hailo, formally bringing the AI semiconductor company’s technology into one of Arizona’s largest established chipmakers.

Silicon Oasis previously reported the agreement when Microchip announced the planned transaction this summer. The acquisition officially closed September 21.

Hailo develops processors and software designed to run artificial intelligence directly on devices rather than relying entirely on cloud data centers.

Its technology includes AI accelerators, vision processors and robotics processors supporting applications such as computer vision, smart cameras, industrial automation, autonomous machines and physical AI systems.

Microchip says the acquisition expands its ability to combine AI acceleration with embedded processing, connectivity, security and power-management technologies.

That combination reflects an important shift in artificial intelligence.

While enormous cloud data centers remain central to training and operating large AI models, a growing amount of inference is moving toward the “edge” — the cameras, robots, vehicles, industrial equipment and other devices where data is actually generated.

For Arizona, the transaction matters because Microchip is one of the state’s foundational semiconductor companies.

Headquartered in Chandler, the company gives Arizona exposure to a different part of the semiconductor market than the massive fabrication investments increasingly associated with the state.

Microchip’s expansion into edge AI also demonstrates how Arizona’s existing semiconductor base is adapting as artificial intelligence reshapes computing.

Building the Silicon Oasis requires more than attracting new factories. It also requires established Arizona technology companies to evolve into emerging markets, acquire new capabilities and compete as computing architectures change.

With Hailo now officially part of Microchip, one of Arizona’s most established semiconductor companies has made another move in that direction.
