AZBio and ASU Launch Tuition Benefit to Strengthen Arizona’s Life-sciences Workforce

Arizona’s bioscience ecosystem is adding a new tool to compete for one of its most important resources: people.

The Arizona Bioindustry Association, Arizona State University and workforce-development company InStride have launched the AZBio ASU Scholarship Program, giving eligible employees of AZBio member organizations and their dependents a 15% tuition scholarship toward more than 400 ASU Online undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs.

Eligible participants can access programs spanning healthcare, technology, business, leadership and other disciplines beginning on their first day of eligibility.

The program may sound less dramatic than a venture round or laboratory opening, but workforce infrastructure is increasingly central to Arizona’s ability to scale its life-sciences economy.

Bioscience companies need researchers, laboratory technicians, software specialists, regulatory professionals, operators and business leaders. As more companies grow in Phoenix, Tucson and other parts of the state, the competition for those skills intensifies.

Employer-connected education programs can help companies retain existing employees while creating pathways for workers to move into higher-skill roles without leaving Arizona. Extending the benefit to dependents also broadens the potential long-term talent pipeline.

Arizona has invested heavily in the physical pieces of an innovation economy—research universities, hospitals, laboratories, advanced manufacturing and startup support. The next step is ensuring enough people can participate in those industries as they grow.

That is an important part of becoming the Silicon Oasis. Strong technology ecosystems are not built only through capital and infrastructure. They also create repeatable pathways for local talent to learn, advance and build careers inside the industries the state is trying to lead.
