York Space Systems Acquires Arizona-Based Solestial in Major Win for U.S. Space Manufacturing
Arizona’s space and advanced manufacturing ecosystem just landed another major win.
York Space Systems announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Tempe-based Solestial, a startup developing next-generation solar technology built specifically for space applications.
Solestial has developed ultrathin, radiation-hardened silicon solar cells designed to operate in the harsh conditions of space while maintaining a path toward scalable, U.S.-based manufacturing. The company says its technology helps address one of the industry’s growing challenges: affordable and scalable power generation for satellites and future space infrastructure.
The acquisition also reinforces Arizona’s emergence as a hub for deep-tech innovation spanning aerospace, semiconductors, defense, and advanced manufacturing.
According to the announcement, approximately 95% of Solestial’s supply chain is already U.S.-based, with the company continuing to expand domestic manufacturing capabilities in Tempe.
For Arizona’s startup ecosystem, the deal represents another example of a locally built company developing technology with national strategic importance—and attracting attention at the highest levels of the space industry.
