ASU SELECTED TO HELP LEAD NATIONAL FOUNDRY SCHOOL FOR ADVANCED MANUFACTURING

Arizona State University has been selected as one of eight universities leading a new national Foundry School focused on rebuilding and expanding America’s advanced-manufacturing capabilities.

The program will train entrepreneurs, engineers, technicians and industrial leaders across factory design, materials, precision production, automation, supply chains and industrial economics. Sessions are expected to include founders and executives from the United States, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and India.

For Arizona, the timing is important.

Billions of dollars are being invested in semiconductor fabrication, packaging, aerospace, defense and other advanced-manufacturing projects across the state. But facilities alone do not create an industrial ecosystem. Companies need engineers, technicians, operators, managers and entrepreneurs who understand how modern manufacturing systems actually work.

That talent requirement is becoming one of the defining challenges of Arizona’s technology expansion.

ASU’s role in the Foundry School places the university inside a national effort to address that challenge while giving Arizona another platform for connecting its manufacturing economy to international expertise.

It also strengthens a larger trend behind Arizona’s emergence as the Silicon Oasis.

The state is moving beyond simply recruiting factories. Universities, workforce organizations and companies are increasingly building the institutional capabilities needed to operate, supply and eventually create the next generation of advanced-manufacturing businesses here.

If Arizona can pair its extraordinary level of industrial investment with a deep pipeline of technical talent and manufacturing entrepreneurs, the result will be far more durable than a collection of individual projects.

It will be an ecosystem capable of producing its own growth.
