Phoenix Takes the Top Spot as US’s Most Startup-Ready Large City
Arizona’s Silicon Oasis startup ecosystem is no longer emerging — it’s arriving. According to a new CommercialCafe report , Phoenix ranks No.1 among large U.S. cities for nurturing startups, outperforming peers like San Antonio, Dallas, and Jacksonville. Even more telling: 11% of all businesses in Phoenix are less than one year old, and the region has seen a 27% increase in new businesses over the past five years. In a tighter capital environment, that kind of momentum doesn’t happen by accident. The report highlights what many founders already feel on the ground: strong fundamentals matter more than hype. Phoenix scored high across startup density, survival rates, coworking access, networking opportunities, and talent — with nearly a quarter of residents holding college degrees. Add in a growing gig and freelance workforce (up 11.4% since 2019), and startups gain the flexibility they need to scale smart. The story doesn’t stop in Phoenix. Tucson and Mesa ranked No.4 and No.5 among mid-sized cities, reinforcing Arizona’s depth beyond its largest metro. Lower operating costs, growing talent pools, and strong university pipelines are turning the entire state into a founder-friendly landscape.
