Phoenix Takes a Bold Step Toward Quantum Leadership
Phoenix is positioning itself at the forefront of the next generation of technological innovation with the launch of the Phoenix Quantum Strategy, a new initiative announced by Mayor Kate Gallego during her 2026 State of the City address.
The strategy aims to establish Phoenix as a leading hub for quantum computing, communications, and sensing technologies—industries widely expected to play a transformative role in the global economy over the coming decades. To lead the effort, the City of Phoenix has appointed Dr. Sethuraman “Panch” Panchanathan, former Director of the National Science Foundation and longtime Arizona State University leader.
Quantum technology has the potential to revolutionize fields ranging from healthcare and bioscience to national security, advanced manufacturing, and artificial intelligence. By leveraging Arizona’s growing strengths in semiconductors, supply chain infrastructure, research institutions, and workforce development, the initiative seeks to create new opportunities for innovation, investment, and economic growth.
The announcement builds upon Phoenix’s momentum in attracting major technology investments and strengthening its position as a national center for advanced industries. With collaboration across government, higher education, and the private sector, the Phoenix Quantum Strategy represents another significant step toward diversifying Arizona’s economy and building industries designed for the future.
For Arizona’s innovation ecosystem, the message is clear: the future is being built here.
