Flinn Foundation Expands the Pipeline From Arizona Research to Arizona Startups

Arizona’s ability to build a stronger bioscience economy depends on what happens between the laboratory and the marketplace.

The Flinn Foundation is putting more resources into that gap.

Applications close September 11 for the Foundation’s Translational Seed Grants Program, which will award up to 10 Arizona-based research teams $100,000 each to advance technologies addressing significant clinical needs. The grants run for 18 months and include commercialization support, mentorship and the opportunity for additional follow-on funding.

The Foundation has also expanded its Bioscience Entrepreneurship Program. Six Arizona bioscience startups will receive $75,000 in support through a nonprofit partner, alongside structured advisorship and access to Arizona’s broader bioscience network. Applications for that program close October 30.

The significance goes beyond the grant dollars.

Universities and research institutions can generate exceptional intellectual property without automatically creating successful companies. Moving discoveries into the market requires founders, capital, customer discovery, regulatory expertise, experienced operators and a network willing to help researchers navigate commercialization.

Arizona has spent years building that connective tissue through organizations including the Flinn Foundation, AZBio, the state’s universities, health systems, accelerators and investors.

That infrastructure matters as Arizona works to diversify its technology economy beyond the sectors for which it is already nationally recognized.

Semiconductors may be the most visible piece of Arizona’s technology story today, but bioscience represents another major opportunity to create companies, attract investment and commercialize research developed here.

A true Silicon Oasis is not built around one industry. It is built around an ecosystem capable of repeatedly turning ideas into companies.

Programs like these help Arizona build that machinery.
