Company Spotlight: Thin Air Nav
By: Shray Patel , Venture Analyst @ Silicon Oasis If GPS went down tomorrow , how much of the world would still work ? It’sa sobering question — especially considering the U.S. Department of Commerce (NIST) estimates GPS has generated over $ 1.4 trillion in economic value since it became available in the 1980s. It’s not just in our phones or cars — GPS is wired into nearly every critical system we depend on, including modern defense. But that dependence also creates a massive vulnerability. Thin Air Nav , a startup based right here in Arizona, is taking that vulnerability head-on. The Problem: GPS Is a Single Point of Failure In high-stakes environments like aerospace and national defense, GPS jamming can reduce the accuracy of guided munitions from 70 % to just 6 % . That’s not just inefficient — it’s dangerous. Thin Air Nav has developed a solution called Marco Polo that keeps guidance systems on target even when GPS is compromised. Their system restores 99.9996 % accuracy, making it one of the most promising answers to a growing national security concern. Where They're At Now The tech is already proven. Marco Polo is at Technology Readiness Level 6 — meaning it’s been tested and validated in relevant environments. Thin Air Nav also won the $ 50,000 NSIN Vector Accelerator award last year, giving them even more momentum in defense and dual-use innovation circles. They’re moving quickly — and so far, the results are hard to ignore. Who’s Behind It The founding team blends deep aerospace expertise with startup hustle. Blake Woodrow started in consulting and climbed to VP of Strategic Consulting at JL before co-founding multiple companies. He also works with early-stage founders through Plug and Play Tech Center and Erez Capital. Justin Armer brings 13 years in aerospace engineering and unmanned systems. He’s helped design aircraft that have set world records and understands firsthand how dependent those systems are on GPS. He’s no stranger to patents or product innovation.
Together, they’ve built something that could play a very real role in the future of national defense. Why We’re Watching Arizona’s startup scene is full of surprising and important stories — and Thin Air Nav is one of them. In a world where resilience and security are becoming just as important as innovation, we’re glad to have companies like this building from the ground up here in the Valley. We'll be keeping an eye on where they go next. 🔗 Want more stories like this in your inbox and mailbox?
